Unjani Clinic

Deloitte recently published a case study focusing on the great work that Unjani Clinic is doing across South Africa. They write that, through our owner-operator model, we’ve done invaluable work to free up some of the limited capacity of our strained public health system.

The Deloitte case study highlights four unique and significant elements of the Unjani Clinic model that set it apart from other private healthcare initiatives and allow it to have such a meaningful impact on disadvantaged communities throughout South Africa. They are: the owner-operator model, the blended finance model, the integrated care model, and the Unjani WeCare apps.

The owner-operator model is the first thing that makes Unjani Clinic so effective. Using this model, healthcare focuses on the invaluable expertise of nurses as primary healthcare workers as well as pillars of their communities. We’ve found that empowering nurses to take charge of community healthcare and wellbeing has resulted in a superior service offering.

Unjani’s blended finance approach is what makes it all possible. Our first 90 clinics were completely donor funded. Our new clinics are funded on a grant and loan basis, allowing nursepreneurs to access funds that would otherwise be inaccessible, and paying back a portion of that investment over a 5-year period. By ensuring the financial sustainability of the clinic, we are able ensure that the prices are standardised and thus remain affordable to the community that the clinic services.

Another way Unjani is making a difference in private healthcare in South Africa is through our integrated care model. Instead of focussing on a single healthcare issue, such as HIV or TB, Unjani Clinics offer comprehensive services for a variety of ailments, so patients can get all the help, expertise and advice they need in one convenient location.

Finally, the Unjani WeCare Clinic Management and WeCare Patient apps, for nurses and patients respectively, allow for patients, nurse owner-operators and clinic assistants to manage individual health and overall healthcare in the clinic more efficiently. By creating bespoke Unjani software, our clinics are able to offer patients a better overall healthcare service.

All these factors combine to make Unjani Clinic a high-quality healthcare service that our patients know and trust. And by reducing the burden on our overloaded public healthcare system, Unjani Clinic is helping to make South Africa a healthier, happier place, by improving access to quality, affordable healthcare for those who need it most.
